Abstract: | This study aimed to identify the role of local authorities in development and protection of archaeological sites in Salfit governorate; Identifying the tools and means used by local authorities. This study also aimed to identify the challenges and obstacles facing local authorities in playing their role in development and protection of archaeological sites. The researcher adopted the qualitative descriptive approach in the study; the study population consisted of all the local authorities in Salfit Governorate, which numbered (18).The study sample included (11) local authorities that were chosen by the intentional method, and the personal interview was the main tool in the study. The results of the study showed that the role of local authorities in the development and protection of archaeological sites is weak and ineffective as required, due to the lack of annual financial allocations and budgets, and the lack of coordination between official government agencies towards the development and protection of antiquities in Area (C).The most prominent challenges and obstacles to the work of local bodies are financial challenges, and Israeli control over archaeological sites. The study recommended the necessity of monitoring budgets and preparing plans to support investment in archaeological and historical sites, raising community awareness, activating the role of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities in supporting and developing local authorities, archaeological, and historical areas in Salfit Governorate. Coordinating work and full cooperation with official government agencies and local institutions in supporting development and protection projects to preserve archaeological sites to make them attractive to tourists |
